Government Rolls Out Nationwide Registration of Small-Scale Miners Under rCOMSDEP

The Government of Ghana has officially begun a nationwide registration exercise for small-scale miners under the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), a major step toward formalising the sector and promoting responsible mining practices.

The initiative is designed to transition informal and artisanal miners into legally recognised, structured cooperatives. It also aims to curb illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, while improving the livelihoods of miners through regulation and support.

The registration process follows a four-phase workflow, including the collection of members’ details, verification of documentation, and assessment of mining sites to ensure operational viability.

As part of the programme, qualified cooperatives will be issued a six-month Temporary Operating Permit, allowing them to begin operations while their full five-year renewable licenses are processed.

In addition to legal recognition, registered groups will benefit from technical assistance and training in responsible and sustainable mining practices.

Meanwhile, the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly has welcomed officials from the rCOMSDEP Secretariat as part of the ongoing nationwide exercise. The Assembly described the initiative as a significant move toward regulating small-scale mining activities, protecting the environment, and creating better economic opportunities for local communities.

Authorities in the district have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the programme and working closely with stakeholders to ensure its successful implementation.

The rCOMSDEP initiative is expected to play a critical role in transforming Ghana’s small-scale mining sector into a more sustainable, accountable, and economically beneficial industry.
