The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi, Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin, has called for greater investment in women, stressing that empowering women is key to building stronger communities and achieving sustainable development.
She made the remarks while delivering a keynote address at the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration held at the AngloGold Ashanti School Park. The event, themed “Give to Gain: Advancing Women Together,” highlighted the shared responsibility of stakeholders to support and uplift women across all sectors.

The celebration, organized in collaboration with AngloGold Ashanti, brought together traditional authorities, corporate leaders, education officials, Assembly Members, women’s groups, and members of the media to honour the contributions and resilience of women in the municipality.
Empowering Women for Development
Hon. Faustilove emphasized that investing in women goes beyond social justice, describing it as a strategic tool for national development.
“When women are given access to education, they raise informed generations. When they are empowered with skills and financial support, they become entrepreneurs who drive local economic growth,” she stated.

She further noted that inclusive governance is essential for progress, cautioning that excluding women from decision-making processes undermines holistic development.
Advancing Women in Obuasi
Reaffirming her commitment to women’s empowerment, the MCE highlighted her slogan “Obaa no aa” as a reflection of her dedication to supporting women at all levels—from mothers and business owners to aspiring leaders.
She also pointed to a significant milestone within the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, where both the Municipal Chief Executive and the Municipal Coordinating Director are women—a development she described as historic and inspiring.

Encouraging young girls to pursue leadership roles, she assured them that their aspirations are valid and achievable.
Partnerships and Progress
Hon. Faustilove acknowledged the role of strategic partnerships, particularly with AngloGold Ashanti, in advancing initiatives focused on women’s health, economic empowerment, and skills development.
Despite the progress made, she urged stakeholders to intensify efforts to ensure equal opportunities for women, calling for increased resource allocation and advocacy.

Call for Collective Action
Drawing inspiration from educationist Dr. James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey, she reiterated the importance of educating and empowering women as a pathway to national growth.
“If we want our society to thrive, we must strengthen both men and women equally,” she noted.
Recognition and Awards
As part of the event, several individuals were honoured for their contributions to society. Awardees included the Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti, Eng. Pobee; the Municipal Assembly’s Physical Planning Officer, Madam Agnes Amoah; and the Obuasi East Human Resource Officer, Madam Stella Ofori Atta.

Conclusion
In her closing remarks, Hon. Faustilove urged both men and women to embrace unity and take practical steps toward advancing gender equality.
“Let us celebrate our women, invest in them, and move forward together,” she said.
The event ended with a renewed commitment from stakeholders to deepen efforts toward women’s empowerment and inclusive development in Obuasi.
