The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has announced that the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Water Project has achieved significant improvements in water supply efficiency through major investments in infrastructure rehabilitation, metering, and water loss reduction initiatives.
Addressing Parliament while responding to questions relating to his Ministry, the Minister highlighted the achievements of the World Bank-funded project, describing it as a major intervention aimed at improving the reliability and efficiency of water service delivery across the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
According to Hon. Adjei, the project rehabilitated more than 300 kilometres of ageing water pipelines, helping to improve the integrity of the distribution network and reduce frequent leakages that have contributed to water losses over the years.
He further disclosed that 60,000 customer and bulk water meters were installed under the project to enhance water measurement, improve billing accuracy, and strengthen revenue collection for Ghana Water Limited (GWL).
The Minister noted that beyond infrastructure upgrades, the project invested in building the operational capacity of Ghana Water Limited by providing specialised training for technical staff and supplying modern leak detection equipment to enable the utility company to identify and repair faults more efficiently.
Hon. Adjei also informed the House that the introduction of performance-based contracts under the GAMA Sanitation and Water Project has produced measurable results. He revealed that the initiative has led to a reduction of more than 23,000 cubic metres of water losses per day in selected operational areas, significantly improving the efficiency of the water distribution system.
He explained that reducing non-revenue water remains a critical priority for the government, as it helps conserve treated water, lowers operational costs, and ensures that more households and businesses have access to reliable water supplies.
According to the Minister, the combined interventions under the project have strengthened the operational performance of Ghana Water Limited, improved water service delivery, and enhanced the overall sustainability of the country’s urban water supply system.
Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in water infrastructure and implementing policies that will improve access to safe and reliable water for communities across the country while ensuring the efficient management of Ghana’s water resources.
