Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, Hon. Abena Osei-Asare, has called on President John Dramani Mahama and his administration to uphold the rule of law, ensure fairness in the judicial system, and promote accountability in the management of state institutions.
Speaking to the media during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration, the former Deputy Finance Minister urged the President to “walk the talk” by ensuring that public institutions operate in accordance with the laws of the country.
Hon. Osei-Asare expressed concern over what she described as selective justice, arguing that recent developments within the judicial system have raised questions about fairness. She maintained that the rule of law must be applied equally to all citizens without political influence.
“We are asking the President to let the institutions go by the rulebook. We cannot build a nation if we fail to abide by the laws we have set for ourselves,” she stated.
The Atiwa East MP also criticized what she described as excessive bail conditions imposed on some individuals, saying such conditions appeared disproportionate to the alleged offences. She called for due process and fairness in the administration of justice.
On governance, Hon. Osei-Asare acknowledged the governing party’s overwhelming parliamentary majority but cautioned against abusing the mandate given by the Ghanaian people.
“It is true that Ghanaians have given one party a two-thirds majority, but that mandate must be used for the benefit of the nation and not abused,” she said.
Touching on the economy, the MP alleged that a state-owned enterprise had recorded losses of approximately US$1.7 billion, which she claimed contributed significantly to the Bank of Ghana’s financial challenges. She stressed the need for greater accountability and prudent management of state resources to safeguard the country’s economy.
The NPP’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration brought together party executives, Members of Parliament, supporters, and sympathizers who say they are protesting what they describe as growing threats to democratic governance, the rule of law, and individual freedoms under the current administration.
