Kenyan scholar and Pan-Africanist Professor P.L.O. Lumumba has called on Africans to reconnect with the vision and ideals of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, particularly his pursuit of political and economic independence for the African continent.
Speaking at the 2026 Padmore-Dubois Nkrumah Memorial Lectures, Prof. Lumumba reflected on Nkrumah’s extensive involvement in the liberation struggles across Africa, describing his energy and commitment to African unity as incomparable.
He noted that Nkrumah worked across the continent to support liberation movements and engage African leaders, despite operating at a time when modern communication technologies such as the internet, email and social media were unavailable.
Prof. Lumumba referenced Nkrumah’s involvement in liberation efforts in countries including Zimbabwe and South Africa, as well as his engagements with leaders such as Modibo Keïta of Mali, Ahmed Sékou Touré of Guinea, Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt and Morocco’s King Mohammed V.
According to him, Nkrumah understood that Africa could not fully realise its potential without unity and a strong understanding of its own identity and history.
Prof. Lumumba further recalled Nkrumah’s call for the emergence of a “new man” and a “new woman” in Ghana, saying the vision remains relevant to Africa’s development.
He urged Africans to draw lessons from Nkrumah’s commitment to continental unity, self-knowledge and the pursuit of genuine independence.
