President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major government-led operation to clear the accumulated waste at Agbogloshie, describing the exercise as a critical step towards improving sanitation, protecting public health and reclaiming the area for productive use.
The President said the exercise, which has officially commenced, will involve the deployment of equipment under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), including tipper trucks, excavators, bulldozers and wheel loaders.
The operation will also receive support from the Ghana Armed Forces, private road contractors, metropolitan and municipal assemblies, and other relevant state institutions.
According to President Mahama, the accumulated waste at Agbogloshie is estimated at about one million tonnes and will be transported to the Adepa Engineered Landfill Site at Nsawam.
He said the evacuation exercise is expected to take approximately 90 days, after which the reclaimed land will be prepared for the proposed Agbogloshie Urban Land Renewal Project.
The project is expected to include an Industrial Park and a major textile factory, with the President highlighting the potential for the redevelopment to create jobs and new economic opportunities, particularly for young people.
President Mahama also stressed the need to prevent the area from becoming a dumping ground again once the clean-up is completed.
He directed the relevant authorities to strengthen enforcement, improve waste collection and promote responsible waste disposal to ensure the sustainability of the intervention.
The President said the Agbogloshie exercise forms part of a broader national waste management programme, which includes the distribution of household waste bins, the establishment of additional waste transfer stations, the development of engineered landfill facilities and an expansion of recycling capacity.
He appealed to residents, traders, motorists, businesses and other stakeholders to cooperate with the teams carrying out the exercise.
President Mahama said the ultimate objective is to restore sanitation, dignity and environmental safety to Agbogloshie while transforming the reclaimed area into a productive space that contributes to economic development.
