The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has paid a working visit to the management of Ghana Post to formally brief them on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) upcoming decongestion exercise and to seek the state postal operator’s support, particularly in areas where its properties have been encroached upon.
The Mayor explained that the engagement forms part of a broader stakeholder consultation initiative by the AMA, which has included security agencies and heads of institutions within communities earmarked for the exercise. According to him, the Assembly considers it essential to notify key stakeholders ahead of time to ensure cooperation and smooth coordination.

He noted that one of the locations likely to be affected is a Ghana Post enclave at North Kaneshie, adding that the Assembly deliberately chose to officially inform Ghana Post “out of respect” and to promote effective collaboration when the operation commences.
Addressing concerns about the sustainability of previous decongestion efforts and the reappearance of traders at unauthorised locations, the Mayor described the initial exercise as a “test case,” especially since Accra had not experienced a major decongestion drive in several years.

He emphasised that the AMA has adopted a more humane approach, stressing that enforcement must be complemented by the provision of alternative trading spaces for affected traders to ensure lasting results.
