The Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Hon. Osman Ayariga, has underscored the transformative potential of the Youth in Oil Palm Initiative in driving youth empowerment through agriculture and agribusiness.
Speaking at the Launch of the Youth in Palm Plantation, Hon. Osman Ayariga highlighted that the initiative places young people at the center of Ghana’s agricultural transformation by combining farming, value addition, and entrepreneurship. He stressed that agriculture must no longer be seen as a subsistence activity but as a thriving business sector capable of creating jobs and boosting the economy.

He pointed to Ghana’s vast fertile lands, particularly in the Eastern Region, as a major advantage that must be fully utilized. According to him, many young people have lost interest in agriculture due to limited opportunities, but initiatives like this are changing that narrative by promoting productive land use and sustainable livelihoods.
Hon. Ayariga revealed that the program will offer practical training, mentorship, and improved access to finance through the National Apprenticeship Program, ensuring that more youth can participate in the agribusiness value chain.

Drawing comparisons with countries like Malaysia, he noted that Ghana has the potential to significantly increase its oil palm production and earnings if the sector is properly harnessed. He emphasized that oil palm can become a major source of income and foreign exchange for the country.
The NYA CEO also reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to collaborating with key stakeholders, including industry players such as Philip Roby, to ensure the success of the initiative.

Touching on youth influence and advocacy, Ayariga called on award-winning musician Shatta Wale to leverage his platform to promote agriculture, support local businesses, and champion campaigns against substance abuse and campus violence.

He further stressed the need for young people to stay away from drugs and violence, urging them instead to take advantage of opportunities within the agricultural sector.
Ayariga concluded by assuring that both the National Youth Authority and the Government of Ghana are fully committed to supporting the Youth in Oil Palm Initiative as a strategic pathway to reducing unemployment and empowering the country’s youth.
