Annoh-Dompreh Warns NDC of Political Fallout Over Cocoa Sector Crisis

Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has issued a strong warning to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over policies affecting Ghana’s cocoa sector, cautioning that growing discontent among farmers could have serious political consequences.

Addressing cocoa farmers at Bepoase, Annoh-Dompreh criticised the recent reduction in cocoa producer prices, describing it as a harmful decision that threatens the livelihoods of farmers and the stability of a key sector of the economy.

He argued that the move undermines confidence in the industry and places additional strain on farmers already facing rising production costs and financial uncertainty.

Speaking during a tour of cocoa-growing communities with members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus, the lawmaker accused the government of failing to adequately respond to the concerns of cocoa farmers.

In a strongly worded remark, he warned that the same voter support that brought the NDC to power could be used to hold them accountable if conditions do not improve. Referring to what he described as “Kokromoti power,” he suggested that farmers—who form a significant voting bloc—could determine the political future of the government.

Annoh-Dompreh emphasised the importance of cocoa farming to Ghana’s economy, describing it as a vital and longstanding pillar that must be protected through responsive and farmer-focused policies.

He pledged that the Minority would continue to challenge decisions they believe are detrimental to farmers, vowing sustained pressure on the government to review its approach and implement measures that safeguard livelihoods in the sector.

His comments come amid rising tensions in cocoa-growing areas, as concerns grow over pricing, delayed payments, and the broader direction of policies impacting farmers.

The Minority’s ongoing nationwide tour is aimed at engaging directly with cocoa farmers and gathering concerns to be presented in Parliament as part of efforts to push for reforms in the sector.
