DVLA Boss Julius Neequaye Kotey Denies Claims Over Cancellation of Number Plate Contract

The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver & Vehicle License Authority (DVLA) has denied allegations that the administration cancelled a new vehicle number plate contract or disrespected industry stakeholders, insisting that the current challenges arose from actions taken by the suppliers themselves.

According to the Mr Julius Neequaye, the contract for the new number plates was signed in 2024, before he assumed office, and was not awarded to a single individual under his tenure. He stressed that at no point did he announce the cancellation of the number plate system.

He explained that leadership of the supplier group had earlier been engaged and discussions held, but the situation escalated when the group allegedly went on strike and resolved not to supply number plates for 2026. He also claimed that offices were closed on January 2, 2026, and that workers were warned not to issue plates, with threats of assault for non-compliance.

This left the government with no option but to act to prevent embarrassment to the state, the official said, adding that he could not remain passive while government operations were disrupted.

Addressing claims of a court injunction on post on UK TV Ghana on facebook , the official questioned the basis of such assertions, stating that no court order had been presented to him.

He also noted that in a show of respect and willingness to resolve the matter, he personally contacted the individual who originally awarded the contract and asked him to engage the suppliers for dialogue. Although a meeting reportedly took place, the suppliers failed to return with feedback.

Mr Neequaye rejected accusations of wrongdoing, urging concerned parties to verify facts with their leadership, including Mr. Bediako and other executives, and called for honesty and restraint, particularly from traditional leaders involved in the public commentary.
