The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that his office has formally submitted an extradition request for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and an alleged accomplice, Ernest Darko Kore, to authorities in the United States.
Dr. Ayine made the announcement on Thursday, 18 December 2025, while addressing the government’s Accountability Series. He explained that the extradition process was initiated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on 19 November 2025, when it formally requested the commencement of extradition proceedings against the two individuals.
He said the Attorney General’s Department began its review after receiving the required documentation and clarifications from the OSP. However, a preliminary assessment by the department’s International Cooperation Unit revealed gaps in the submission, prompting a request for additional information.
“In a letter dated 25 November, we communicated our observations to the Office of the Special Prosecutor and requested supplementary documentation to ensure the completeness of the extradition package,” Dr. Ayine stated.
According to him, the OSP responded on 9 December 2025 with the required documents, allowing the extradition request to be finalised. The completed package was subsequently transmitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 10 December for onward submission to the relevant authorities in the United States, particularly the Department of Justice.
Dr. Ayine emphasised that the matter is now before the American authorities, noting that the decision on whether the two individuals will be extradited lies with the US judicial system.
“It is now up to the authorities of the United States, especially the judicial authorities, to determine whether there is sufficient basis for the extradition of the two accused persons to Ghana to stand trial,” he said.
