President Mahama Vows to Defend Ghana’s Streets Against Criminals, Strengthen Police Capabilities

President John Dramani Mahama has made a firm pledge that Ghana will not relinquish control of any street, community, or public space to criminals. He reassured the public that the government is fully committed to protecting citizens’ safety and will decisively tackle crime.

Speaking at the Police Headquarters in Accra during the presentation of 40 armoured and operational vehicles to the Ghana Police Service, President Mahama emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the country’s security infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of equipping the police with the necessary resources to combat crime effectively.

The President took the opportunity to commend the police for their recent successes in the fight against armed robbery, bank robberies, and unresolved murder cases. He noted that improved intelligence and investigative efforts have led to the arrest of numerous suspects, contributing to a safer environment, especially on Ghana’s highways. “Our highways are becoming safer thanks to your efforts in tackling robbers and ensuring they face justice,” he stated.

President Mahama revealed that the newly acquired vehicles, which include armoured units, pickups, and other specialized equipment, represent just the first phase of an ongoing effort to upgrade the police’s resources. He also shared that two tow trucks and 10 additional operational vehicles are set to arrive before the end of the month, with every police district receiving pickups to enhance patrol capabilities.

Looking ahead, the President outlined plans to further strengthen the police force by training special detachments in drone surveillance, intelligence gathering, and rapid response techniques. These measures are aimed at improving public safety nationwide.

Acknowledging the risks faced by law enforcement officers, President Mahama stressed that the provision of adequate equipment would prevent the loss of lives during high-risk operations. “Many police officers have died in the line of duty because they were not properly equipped. That will no longer be the case,” he assured.

The President reiterated that security is a result of careful investment, professional policing, and constant vigilance, emphasizing that the government will remain steadfast in its fight against crime. He also emphasized the need for strong, visible policing and better communication systems to support the national crime-fighting strategy. “We will not allow lawlessness to take root in Ghana,” he vowed, promising to continue strengthening the country’s law enforcement capabilities.

In closing, President Mahama made it clear that the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and safety for all Ghanaians is unwavering, ensuring that no community will be left at the mercy of criminals.
