She turned the role of First Lady into a force for change – President Mahama on Nana Konadu’s legacy

President John Dramani Mahama paid tribute to the late Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, describing her death as the closing of a “significant chapter in Ghana’s political and social journey.” The remarks were delivered on his behalf by Joyce Bawah Mongtari during a state funeral at Black Star Square.

In the tribute, Mahama said Nana Konadu was “far more than a former First Lady; she was a pioneering leader, an unwavering champion of women’s empowerment and a trailblazer in our political landscape.” He highlighted her contributions to literacy, maternal health, early childhood education and economic empowerment—particularly for women and girls in rural areas—and noted that she transformed the role of First Lady into a platform for national development.

The President praised her courage, principles and devotion to her family, and said her legacy will continue to inspire current and future generations.

He concluded, “May her soul rest in peace and may her legacy guide us toward a more just, inclusive and equitable Ghana.”
