The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has commended the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and its partners for their ongoing efforts to promote food security and drive Ghana toward self-sufficiency.
Speaking during a working visit, the Vice President praised the Minister and stakeholders for what she described as an impressive and forward-looking presentation, while acknowledging the dedication of regional and district teams contributing to the country’s agricultural transformation.

She underscored the fundamental importance of food, describing it as the most basic necessity of life, and stressed that Ghana must prioritize agricultural development to reduce reliance on imported food. According to her, the country possesses immense agricultural potential, particularly within its tropical climate, which must be fully harnessed to ensure sustainable growth.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang also highlighted the critical role women play in agriculture, commending efforts to empower women—especially those in vulnerable situations—to produce food for their households and communities. She noted that strengthening women’s participation is key to achieving long-term food security.

Touching on innovation and research, the Vice President emphasized the need to better utilize institutions such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). She called for stronger collaboration between research bodies and the Ministry to ensure that scientific findings are effectively integrated into agricultural policies and practices.
She further praised initiatives promoting the local production of agricultural machinery, particularly the involvement of technical schools in manufacturing equipment. According to her, encouraging local production not only boosts self-reliance but also ensures proper maintenance, as locally trained personnel are better equipped to manage and repair such machinery.

The Vice President acknowledged challenges facing some communities, including conflict-related disruptions, and urged stakeholders to explore ways of engaging and supporting affected areas to ensure inclusive participation in agricultural programs.
She reiterated the importance of teamwork and coordination across all levels, explaining that her visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between leadership and field officers. She expressed confidence in the Ministry’s direction and pledged continued support to advance the government’s broader development agenda.

Vice President, Professor Opoku-Agyemang concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian has access to adequate food, aligning with the national vision of sustainable development and economic resilience.
