IAIA Ghana Holds Conference, Handover Ceremony and Dinner Amid Regulatory Transition

Environmental professionals in Ghana have marked a significant milestone in the sector as the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) Ghana hosted its conference, handover ceremony and dinner against the backdrop of major regulatory reforms.

The event focused on the transition from Ghana’s former environmental regulatory framework to a more dynamic regime under the newly enacted Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Act and its accompanying LI 2504 regulations. Opening remarks described the occasion as both a celebration and a moment for reflection, emphasizing the far-reaching implications of the new law for environmental governance and professional practice.

Speakers encouraged participants to engage critically with the evolving regulatory environment to help shape future systems that are responsive, efficient and credible. The outgoing executive committee was commended for its leadership and service, while confidence was expressed in the capacity of the incoming executives to advance the association’s mandate.

To broaden participation, the conference was streamed live on LinkedIn and YouTube, enabling professionals and stakeholders to join remotely. Organisers indicated that additional webinars and updates would be rolled out in the coming weeks. Discussions highlighted the increasing demand for environmental consultants, the central role of project-based advisory services, and the challenges encountered in structuring professional services during the association’s formative years.

Reporting and data management emerged as key concerns during the conference. Participants underscored the risks associated with handling large volumes of environmental data while maintaining high reporting standards. Calls were made for improved knowledge management systems and enhanced data quality, with several speakers stressing the need to move beyond basic tools and invest in more robust solutions. The importance of competent, certified and well-trained professionals was repeatedly emphasized as critical to safeguarding professional standards.

The conference also examined the practice of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in Ghana, including the operational challenges of establishing and maintaining a functional secretariat. Speakers discussed ongoing efforts to raise the association’s public profile and strengthen engagement, while acknowledging financial constraints linked to heavy reliance on membership dues. Participants called for the diversification of funding sources to ensure long-term sustainability. It was further announced that the association’s current Chief Executive Officer would be stepping down, prompting the search for new leadership support.

In closing, speakers expressed strong confidence in the incoming leadership and their ability to build on the foundations laid by previous executives. Past leaders pledged their continued support, encouraging the new team to draw on the collective experience and commitment of the membership. The event concluded with a formal handover and dinner, celebrating service, continuity and a shared commitment to advancing environmental impact assessment practice in Ghana.
