Make Sanitation a Priority- Atwima Nwabiagya South MCE Rallies Residents of cleaner Municipality

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Atwima Nwabiagya South of the AshantiRegion,Honourable Wisdom Osei Boama(Okumkom), has urged residents of the municipality and Ghanaians at large to treat monthly sanitation exercises as a civic responsibility to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more disciplined society.

According to the MCE, maintaining environmental cleanliness must not be left to government alone but should be embraced collectively by citizens as a shared duty.

Hon.Osei Boama made the call during a massive general clean-up exercise organised by the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal Assembly along the principal streets of Abuakwa. The exercise formed part of the Assembly’s renewed commitment to improving sanitation standards and promoting preventive healthcare across the municipality.

The exercise saw the clearing of choked gutters, sweeping of streets, desilting of drains, and the collection of refuse from public spaces.

Addressing participants, the MCE stressed that poor sanitation remains one of the leading causes of communicable diseases and avoidable health expenses, adding that a clean environment directly translates into improved public health, increased productivity, and community development.

He further encouraged residents to fully embrace the government’s sanitation day policy and commit themselves to cleaning their homes and surroundings at least every two weeks. He noted that sustained community participation would drastically reduce waste management challenges and cut down the huge budgetary allocations often spent on sanitation-related issues.

“Sanitation is not only a health issue but a development and governance matter. When we keep our environment clean, we save public funds and channel resources into other developmental projects,” he emphasised.

Hon. Osei Boama also used the opportunity to call for continuous collaboration between the Assembly, stakeholders, and community members to sustain sanitation gains and build a municipality that residents can be proud of.

The exercise recorded a strong turnout, with assembly members, sanitation officers, youth groups, fun clubs, church organisations, traders, party supporters, and residents actively participating, demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental cleanliness and community development.
