A Swearing of the Oath of Allegiance ceremony was held in Accra yesterday to officially grant Ghanaian citizenship to members of the African diaspora, reaffirming the country’s commitment to reconnecting with people of African descent across the world.
Addressing the gathering, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak emphasized that Ghana remains committed to a transparent, credible, and legally grounded citizenship process. He noted that the administration of citizenship in Ghana strictly adheres to national laws while ensuring fairness and integrity.

According to the Minister, individuals granted citizenship are entitled to the full rights and protections under Ghanaian law, while also accepting the duties and responsibilities that come with being part of the Ghanaian nation.
The Minister reiterated the government’s recognition of the diaspora as Ghana’s 17th Region and Africa’s sixth region, stressing the vital role the diaspora plays in national development and global engagement.
The ceremony also symbolized reconciliation and reconnection between Ghana and people of African descent whose ancestors were displaced through the transatlantic slave trade. Officials described the event as part of Ghana’s broader effort to heal historical wounds and restore ties with the global African family.

To strengthen these connections, the government is advancing key initiatives including the Diaspora Birthright Certificate Framework and a structured pathway to citizenship. The policies, which have received Cabinet approval, are expected to institutionalize the relationship between Ghana and members of the diaspora by placing it firmly within the country’s legal and policy framework.

Officials explained that the initiatives will help standardize citizenship procedures and ensure they are properly anchored within Ghana’s legal and administrative systems.
The government also noted that the international community increasingly recognizes slavery as a crime against humanity, and Ghana is proud to play a leading role in reconnecting Africa with its diaspora.

Newly sworn citizens were encouraged to actively engage with Ghanaian institutions, communities, and opportunities. The Minister stressed that citizenship is more than a legal status—it is an invitation to contribute to Ghana’s growth through skills, investment, and professional networks.

Authorities believe the inclusion of diaspora citizens will further strengthen Ghana’s position as a major hub for engagement with the global African diaspora.
The ceremony also acknowledged the efforts of government agencies and partner institutions whose collaboration ensured a smooth and credible citizenship process.

The event concluded with warm congratulations to the new citizens, who were welcomed as full members of the Ghanaian nation and encouraged to build meaningful connections while contributing to the country’s development.
