Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin says Europe is leaning toward diplomacy, urging calm and dialogue amid rising US–Iran tensions

Micheál Martin, Prime Minister of Ireland, has outlined Europe’s perspective on the ongoing U.S.–Iran tensions, as the military operation known as “Operation Epic Fury” enters its third week.

Speaking ahead of his St. Patrick’s Day engagement with Donald Trump, Martin emphasized that many European nations are leaning toward diplomacy rather than escalation. In an interview on Special Report, he stressed that peaceful resolution remains the preferred path.

“From the Irish perspective, we favor dialogue and diplomacy wherever possible,” Martin stated, underscoring Ireland’s long-held commitment to conflict resolution through negotiation.

While he agreed with Washington’s stance that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons, Martin signaled a clear difference in approach regarding how that objective should be achieved. He acknowledged concerns about Iran’s leadership, describing it as repressive, but maintained that diplomatic channels should remain central.

Martin also drew on Ireland’s own history to reinforce his position, referencing The Troubles — a decades-long conflict that shaped the country’s outlook on peacebuilding.

“We experienced a prolonged period of conflict on the island of Ireland, and it taught us valuable lessons about resolving disputes,” he said, highlighting the importance of dialogue in ending violence.

His remarks reflect a broader European sentiment that prioritizes de-escalation and negotiation, even as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to rise.
