Emotions Boil Over as Farmers Display Protest Placards at Minority Meeting

Tensions in Ghana’s cocoa sector were on full display as farmers in Boaman Suku staged a dramatic protest during a meeting with the Minority Caucus of Parliament.

The engagement, held in the Afigya Kwabere North District, saw visibly frustrated farmers clad in red armbands and T-shirts, holding up placards with bold and emotional messages to express their dissatisfaction over conditions in the cocoa industry.

Among the inscriptions were calls for unpaid cocoa proceeds, accusations against the Ghana Cocoa Board, and claims of broken promises by the government. Some placards directly appealed to former President John Dramani Mahama, demanding the release of promised payments, while others decried the recent reduction in cocoa prices and its impact on farmers’ livelihoods.

The protest reflects growing anger among cocoa farmers, many of whom say they are struggling with delayed payments, declining producer prices, and rising input costs.

The Minority Caucus’ visit forms part of a broader nationwide tour aimed at engaging cocoa farmers and gathering firsthand accounts of the challenges facing the sector.

Friday’s scenes underscored the intensity of frustrations at the grassroots level, as farmers used the opportunity not only to voice their concerns but also to send a strong message to policymakers about the urgent need for intervention and reforms in the cocoa industry.
