Hon. Faustina Elikplim Akurugu Reports on Constituency Development and Parliamentary Work

Honourable Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya Constituency, has delivered a detailed address to her constituents, highlighting her achievements in Parliament and her development initiatives across the constituency over the past year. Speaking before assembly members, unit committee members, traditional authorities, religious leaders, constituency executives, party officials, and the media, Hon. Akurugu emphasized her commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.

Hon. Akurugu began by acknowledging the people of her constituency for entrusting her with the mandate to represent them in Parliament. She stressed that in a democratic system, political authority derives from the people, making it both a constitutional and moral duty for elected leaders to provide consistent feedback on their stewardship.

Parliamentary Contributions and Legislative Oversight

In her address, Hon. Akurugu highlighted her active participation in parliamentary debates, noting that effective representation requires more than mere presence—it demands meaningful engagement in shaping policies that protect citizens’ welfare and advance national development. Among her notable contributions, she participated actively in the 2026 budget statement debate, particularly emphasizing the strengthening of Ghana’s agricultural sector as a driver of economic growth, food security, and employment creation. She expressed strong support for government programs such as the “Feed Ghana” initiative and the Coupon Kitty Poultry Program, designed to boost local production and empower farmers nationwide.

She also underscored her role in supporting significant legislative reforms, including the Electronic Transfer Levy Repeal Bill 2025, aimed at easing financial burdens and enhancing digital financial inclusion, and the Customs Exercise and Petroleum Taxation Reforms, which modernize energy policies to align with current economic realities. In addition, she contributed to discussions on the Social Protection Bill 2025 and the Ghana Education Trust Fund Amendment Bill, which collectively aim to strengthen the social safety net, provide financial relief to students, and expand access to quality education.

Hon. Akurugu serves on several key parliamentary committees, including the Appointments Committee, where she vets high-level government nominees; the Public Accounts Committee, which ensures accountability in public finances; and the Food, Agriculture, and Global Affairs Committee, which guides policies on agriculture and food security. Through these roles, she emphasized her commitment to transparency, good governance, and citizen-focused legislative action.

Constituency Development Initiatives

Beyond her parliamentary duties, Hon. Akurugu reported extensively on initiatives within her constituency. She has established a fully operational constituency office to provide a direct link between residents and her team, ensuring that constituents’ concerns are addressed promptly. She also institutionalized the Annual State of the Constituency Address, which serves as a formal platform to report progress, highlight challenges, and outline future priorities.

Education

Education remains a major focus of her administration. Hon. Akurugu has provided financial support to about 200 junior high school graduates entering senior high school, distributed learning materials and exercise books to basic schools, and improved classroom infrastructure by repairing damaged furniture and renovating classroom blocks. She is also supporting the completion of the Abukobi Senior High School project to expand access to secondary education, as well as initiatives to implement the government’s flagship 1 Million Bonanza Program.

Healthcare

In healthcare, Hon. Akurugu has supported multiple health facilities, including the Abukobi Polyclinic and the Adeprev Chief Compound, by providing essential medical equipment, funding, and renovations. Projects include the modernization of maternity blocks and completion of outpatient departments to improve access to quality medical services. Public health education programs, sanitation drives, and monthly cleanup exercises have been implemented to promote healthier communities.

Energy and Infrastructure

Addressing energy challenges, Hon. Akurugu initiated the Light Up the Constituency Program, installing streetlights in key areas like Hatcho and Papaw to enhance safety and visibility at night. She also deployed solar panels to critical health facilities and delivered 400 streetlights to the Ministry of Energy to continue the program across the constituency. On water supply, emergency interventions were made to alleviate shortages in affected areas.

Infrastructure development, particularly road construction and rehabilitation, has been a priority. She reported progress on several road projects, including the 5.2 km major road, the 10 km Taifa–True Faith Church road, and the Virgin 8.2 km Pure Water Road. Negotiations with contractors for urban roads and ongoing reshaping works are advancing steadily.

Youth, Sports, and Economic Empowerment

Hon. Akurugu is actively promoting youth development and sports. The NP Soccer Festival Initiative has identified and nurtured football talents, with some players supported to pursue professional opportunities abroad. She is also lobbying for modern sporting facilities to support youth engagement.

In economic empowerment, particularly for women, over 300,000 Ghana Cedis have been distributed in collaboration with the Women’s Empowerment Programs, with plans to establish a dedicated women’s bank to provide sustainable support. Through the National Apprenticeship Program, young people have received vocational training and support to establish small businesses, while targeted assistance has been provided to persons with disabilities.

Appreciation and Commitment

Hon. Akurugu expressed gratitude to the municipal chief executive, coordinating director, directors of health, education, and roads, as well as chiefs, imams, clergy, residents’ associations, market women, security personnel, and constituents for their unwavering support. She reiterated her commitment to unity, transparency, and inclusive development, pledging to continue advocating for policies in Parliament and implementing programs that improve livelihoods and infrastructure within the constituency.

She concluded by emphasizing that the progress achieved is a result of collective effort, responsible leadership, and the dedication of the people, affirming that her focus remains on delivering a constituency that works for all.
