Ga East Municipal Assembly Launches 24-Hour Clean Ga East Program to Boost Sanitation and Public Health

The Ga East Municipal Assembly, has officially launched the 24-Hour Clean Ga East Program, a comprehensive initiative aimed at improving sanitation, public health, and environmental sustainability across the municipality. The program was unveiled under the leadership of the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Edmund Agboh, with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, delivering the inaugural address.

In his address, Hon. Agboh emphasized that a clean and well-maintained environment is a fundamental pillar of development and prosperity. He outlined that the program represents a strategic shift towards institutionalized, round-the-clock sanitation services, in line with national policies empowering metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies to manage sanitation and street cleaning.

24-Hour Sanitation Services and Strategic Interventions

The program introduces dedicated sanitation teams operating 24/7 to ensure routine cleaning of principal streets and public spaces. A municipal Sanitation Task Force, comprising health officers, has been established to enforce sanitation bylaws and ensure strict compliance across communities.

To support the initiative, the assembly has recruited 100 sweepers and sanitary laborers, trained and deployed throughout the municipality. The assembly has also procured a fleet of vehicles, motorbikes, cleaning tools, and monitoring equipment to strengthen operational capacity.

Investments in waste management infrastructure are a key component of the program. In collaboration with Witness Energy Limited, a mini waste transfer site has been established to support informal waste collectors and improve resource recovery.

Public Engagement and Civic Responsibility

Hon. Agboh highlighted that the success of the 24-Hour Clean Ga East Program depends on collective responsibility. He urged residents, traders, community leaders, and traditional and religious authorities to actively support the initiative and embrace positive sanitation practices.

Public education campaigns will be intensified to promote behavioral change and civic responsibility, with outreach programs targeting schools, markets, and other public spaces. Enforcement officers have been tasked to carry out their duties with integrity, professionalism, and fairness, ensuring that the program is implemented without fear or favoritism.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

The Municipal Chief Executive assured residents that the assembly will provide ongoing supervision, logistics, and operational support to guarantee smooth implementation of the program. The initiative aims to position Ga East as a benchmark for cleanliness, order, and environmental stewardship in the Greater Accra Region.

Concluding his remarks, Hon. Agboh reiterated that sanitation is not just about cleanliness—it is a key driver of development, public health, and prosperity. The program represents a bold step toward creating a more sustainable, healthy, and productive municipality for all residents.

The launch ceremony included the introduction of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, who commended the assembly for the initiative and highlighted the critical role of sanitation in community development.
