Accra, April 24, 2026 — H.E. President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched Ghana’s first National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy, setting the country on a path to harness emerging technologies for inclusive growth while ensuring alignment with local values and cultural identity.

Speaking at the launch in Accra, President Mahama underscored the importance of developing AI systems that reflect Ghanaian ethics, languages, and societal realities. He stressed that the country is committed to deploying AI responsibly to improve living conditions and accelerate transformation across critical sectors of the economy.

The National AI Strategy outlines a comprehensive roadmap to build a responsible and human-centered AI ecosystem in Ghana. It focuses on strengthening local talent and research capacity, encouraging AI adoption across key industries, and establishing robust ethical and legal frameworks to guide its use. The initiative also seeks to position Ghana as a leading hub for AI innovation within the region.

A key pillar of the strategy is bridging the digital divide to ensure equitable access and participation, so that no Ghanaian is left behind in the AI-driven future.
President Mahama noted that countries around the world are rapidly embracing AI as a tool for development, urging Ghana to take a proactive leadership role. He emphasized that Ghana must move beyond being mere consumers of foreign technologies and instead build, own, and govern AI solutions that understand local languages, respect cultural values, and address national challenges.

The high-level event brought together senior government officials, including Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, alongside ministers responsible for Foreign Affairs, Education, and Fisheries. Industry leaders, academics, and development partners were also in attendance, reflecting broad support for the country’s digital transformation agenda.
