Bruno Fernandes wins Football Writers’ men’s award

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named the Football Writers’ Association Men’s Footballer of the Year after a standout season for the club.

The Portuguese midfielder has recorded eight goals and 20 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions, playing a central role in United’s improved performances under interim manager Michael Carrick.

Fernandes secured 45% of the votes from more than 900 FWA members, finishing 28 votes ahead of Arsenal’s Declan Rice, who placed second. Manchester City striker Erling Haaland came in third.

He becomes the first Manchester United player to win the award since Wayne Rooney in 2010, underlining his influence during a season in which United are set to finish without silverware for a second consecutive year. However, the club are on course for a third-place Premier League finish and a return to the UEFA Champions League.

The 31-year-old, who joined United from Sporting CP in January 2020 for £67.7 million, recently reached 300 appearances for the club. His latest form comes after speculation over his future, with reports last season suggesting United would have allowed him to leave for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal or other European clubs.

Fernandes instead chose to stay at Old Trafford, despite interest elsewhere. He remains under contract until 2027, with an option for an additional year, and his performances have strengthened expectations of a new deal despite ongoing efforts by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to reduce wage expenditure.

The midfielder previously stated that he would not make any decisions regarding his future until after the upcoming World Cup.
