Former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to put aside internal differences and unite behind the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In a statement issued on June 19, 2026, Dr. Acheampong acknowledged the disappointment that often follows a competitive primary contest, noting that he, like former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, contested the party’s presidential primary but did not emerge victorious.
He stressed that the NPP’s most important task after its 2024 electoral defeat is to rebuild, reconcile, and position itself for a return to power in 2028.
Dr. Acheampong expressed concern over recent comments by Kennedy Agyapong and his reported threat to take action against the party and some individuals. While recognizing Mr. Agyapong’s immense contributions, loyalty, and influence within the NPP, he urged him to channel his energy toward healing divisions rather than deepening them.
Addressing the source of Mr. Agyapong’s grievances, Dr. Acheampong admitted that some individuals associated with various campaigns, including his own, made disrespectful and insulting remarks against the former presidential aspirant during and after the contest. He described such conduct as unfortunate and inconsistent with the party’s values.
However, he maintained that there is no evidence linking Dr. Bawumia to those attacks, emphasizing that the individuals involved acted on personal grievances and should not be used as a basis to blame the party’s flagbearer or the NPP as a whole.
Dr. Acheampong also called for honesty and reconciliation from all sides, noting that heated political contests often result in harsh exchanges. He appealed to all parties involved to forgive one another and work together in the interest of the party.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia now represents every member of the NPP, including supporters of all former presidential aspirants, and deserves the collective backing of the party.
He therefore urged Kennedy Agyapong, his supporters, and all party faithful to end internal conflicts and unite behind the NPP’s leadership.
“Unity is not weakness. Unity is how we win,” Dr. Acheampong stated, stressing that party unity remains the surest path to reclaiming power in 2028.
