Accra, September 17, 2026 — A research study conducted by a team of lecturers from the University of Ghana, led by Dr. Chris Atadika, has found that a majority of surveyed New Patriotic Party (NPP) stakeholders expect former Subin MP, Hon. Eugene Boakye Antwi, to win the party’s National General Secretary election scheduled for October 3, 2026.
According to the research findings, 74.2% of respondents, representing 657 out of 889 participants, identified Eugene Boakye Antwi as the candidate they expect to win the General Secretary position.

Incumbent General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua was identified by 25.1% of respondents, while Sylvester Tetteh recorded 0.7%.
The researchers, however, emphasized that the figures reflect the expectations of the surveyed respondents and should not be interpreted as an independent prediction of the election outcome.
The study also examined respondents’ preferences and perceptions of the candidates. Eugene Boakye Antwi recorded 76.6% as the most preferred candidate, compared with 23.1% for Justin Frimpong Kodua.
On the question of which candidate could help the NPP win the 2028 general election, 60.1% selected Eugene Boakye Antwi, while 39.2% selected Justin Frimpong Kodua.
The study further reported a higher level of name recognition for Eugene Boakye Antwi, with 82.7% of respondents mentioning his name when asked to identify candidates contesting the position. Justin Frimpong Kodua was mentioned by 13%.
Respondents also identified good communication skills and boldness, the ability to help the party secure victory in 2028, and the ability to unify the party as some of the key qualities required of the next General Secretary.
The research involved 889 NPP stakeholders, with the researchers reporting 100% awareness among respondents of the General Secretary contest.
Dr. Chris Atadika and the University of Ghana research team briefed the media on the full findings at the Department of Political Science, University of Ghana, Legon, on September 17.
