The legal team of Chairman Wontumi has intensified its defence in the ongoing Tano-Nimiri Forest Reserve mining case, raising fresh concerns over the handling and admissibility of certain pieces of evidence presented before the court.
During the latest court proceedings, members of the defence team challenged the use of video footage they claimed may have been obtained or introduced from questionable and unauthorized sources. According to the lawyers, the issue surrounding the origin of the footage remains unclear, with suggestions that some of the materials may have been linked to investigations conducted by the Forestry Commission.
The defence argued that the court must exercise caution in admitting evidence whose source and handling process have not been fully established. Lawyers for Chairman Wontumi maintained that proper legal procedures must be followed before such materials can be relied upon in court proceedings. The judge, after hearing submissions from both sides, reportedly upheld part of the defence’s concerns while rejecting aspects of the argument relating to the second document tendered before the court.
Speaking during proceedings, the legal team emphasized that the allegations against Chairman Wontumi are largely connected to land-related matters within the Tano-Nimiri Forest Reserve. They noted that testimony expected from officials of the Forestry Commission could become a significant aspect of the case as investigations continue.
The defence further disclosed that efforts are underway to consolidate related statements, evidence, and legal arguments in order to present a more coordinated defence before the court. Lawyers indicated that there are still pending documents and important court forms yet to be completed and filed as part of the ongoing legal process.
At one point during the hearing, discussions also centered on the need to involve additional legal support and colleagues to help address key legal questions expected to arise as the matter progresses. The defence suggested that collaboration among members of the legal team would be crucial in responding to issues surrounding evidence, investigations, and witness testimonies.
The case continues to attract public attention due to the allegations of illegal mining activities within the forest reserve, with both the prosecution and defence expected to intensify legal arguments in the coming hearings. Proceedings are expected to continue as cross-examination of witnesses and the presentation of further evidence remain ongoing.
