It’s an insult to ask musicians what they do apart from music- Sarkodie

Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has voiced strong concern over what he describes as a dismissive attitude toward music as a legitimate profession.

Taking to social media, the rapper—often referred to as “Rap Dacta”—criticized the frequent question posed to musicians: “What proper business do you do apart from music?” According to him, such remarks undermine the value and seriousness of the music industry.

Sarkodie emphasized that music is not just a passion but a fully-fledged business that requires strategic investment, planning, and commitment. He argued that, like any other enterprise, a music career carries risks but also holds significant financial potential when managed properly.

Highlighting the global scale of the industry, he noted that music remains one of the biggest sectors worldwide, capable of generating substantial revenue and opportunities. He further stressed that questioning its legitimacy as a “proper business” reflects a broader misconception that needs to be corrected.

The rapper concluded that pursuing music professionally should be seen as a valid business decision, urging a shift in mindset toward recognizing the industry’s economic and cultural impact.
