Residents celebrate as 8.2km Virgin Ashongman road project finally takes off under Hon. Faustina Elikplim Akurugu

The Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, has reaffirmed her commitment to transforming road infrastructure in the constituency, as construction officially begins on a long-anticipated 8.2-kilometre stretch.

Speaking at a short ceremony attended by residents, traditional authorities, and the media, the MP expressed appreciation for the continued support and patience of the community. She acknowledged that the road, which has remained in a deplorable state for years, has posed significant challenges to residents and commuters.

Hon. Akurugu recalled that during her maiden State of the Constituency Address, she assured constituents that contractors would soon be deployed to site. Just a week after that pledge, work is now set to commence—an outcome she described as a clear demonstration of her dedication to delivering on promises.

The road project will be undertaken in phases by two contractors. One contractor will begin construction from Haatso to a designated section, while FT Global will continue from that point through to Ashongman Last Stop. The stretch will connect Old Ashongman, New Ashongman, and Ashongman Last Stop, improving access and easing movement across these communities.

The MP emphasized that although previous representatives were unable to complete the project, her proactive lobbying and consistent engagement with key stakeholders made the difference within her first year in office. She noted that the concerns raised by residents during her campaign significantly influenced her decision to prioritize the road.

She also disclosed that her intervention involved engaging the President, who subsequently tasked the Roads Minister to inspect the area—paving the way for the project’s commencement.

In addition, Hon. Akurugu highlighted progress on another road initiative, stating that she recently cut sod for the Musuku road project on March 2, which is currently under construction.

Despite the milestone, the MP admitted that several roads within Dome-Kwabenya are still in poor condition. She, however, assured constituents of her unwavering commitment to continue lobbying for more infrastructure projects to address the challenges.

The 8.2km Virgin Ashongman Last Stop–Pure Water–Old Ashongman road project is expected to significantly improve connectivity, ease transportation, and stimulate economic activity in the area, bringing much-needed relief to residents.
