The Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Alhaji Amin Abdul-Rahaman, has called for effective implementation of Ghana’s newly launched National Urban Policy (2026–2035) and National Slum Upgrading and Prevention Strategy (2026–2035), stressing that their success will depend on tangible results rather than the quality of the documents.
Speaking at the official launch during the Ninth Session of the Ghana Urban Forum, Alhaji Abdul-Rahaman said the two policy frameworks are designed to improve service delivery, strengthen land and housing management systems, enhance community participation, and prevent the growth of new informal settlements.
He noted that the initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to promoting social inclusion, protecting human dignity, and advancing sustainable urban development across the country.
The Chief Director commended the various institutions and stakeholders that contributed to the development of the policy documents, including technical agencies, local authorities, professional bodies, and development partners such as UN-Habitat, the World Bank, the European Union, UNICEF, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
Alhaji Abdul-Rahaman urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to integrate the new frameworks into their development plans and budgets to ensure effective implementation at the local level. He also called for continued support from development partners, increased private sector investment, and active citizen participation in building cleaner, safer, and more resilient communities.
He assured stakeholders that the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs remains fully committed to coordinating the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of both policy frameworks to ensure they guide investments, strengthen institutions, and improve the quality of life of Ghanaians.
On behalf of the Minister, Alhaji Abdul-Rahaman officially invited the Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission and Presidential Adviser on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), who chaired the event, to deliver the keynote address and formally launch the National Urban Policy (2026–2035) and the National Slum Upgrading and Prevention Strategy (2026–2035). He concluded by expressing optimism that the policies would drive inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban development in Ghana
