Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, launches 24-Hour Clean Ga East Program to boost sanitation and economic growth

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to sanitation as a key driver of sustainable development, during the official launch of the 24-Hour Clean Ga East Program by the Ga East Municipal Assembly.

Addressing residents, stakeholders, and officials at the ceremony, the Minister commended the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Edmund Agboh, and the Assembly for what she described as a bold, forward-looking, and timely initiative. She noted that the program aligns seamlessly with the government’s flagship 24-hour economy policy, which seeks to enhance productivity, create jobs, and improve service delivery across all sectors.

According to the Minister, sanitation remains a cornerstone of national development, emphasizing that no society can achieve meaningful progress without a clean and healthy environment. She highlighted that improved sanitation plays a vital role in safeguarding public health, reducing disease outbreaks, promoting tourism, and attracting investment to drive economic growth.

She further described the 24-hour cleaning initiative as a strategic shift from periodic clean-up exercises to a more consistent and sustainable sanitation model. This approach, she explained, is designed to ensure that communities within the municipality remain clean at all times, reflecting a proactive and modern system of environmental management.

Stressing the importance of collaboration, Hon. Linda Ocloo called for an inclusive and participatory approach to the implementation of the program. She urged the Assembly to actively engage key groups such as market women, artisans, transport unions, youth groups, and residents’ associations in both planning and execution. According to her, this will not only improve efficiency but also deepen community ownership and ensure long-term sustainability.

The Minister also assured that the Regional Coordinating Council will provide the necessary technical guidance, coordination, and institutional support to municipal and district assemblies. She noted that the Council remains committed to helping local authorities develop practical, innovative, and sustainable sanitation strategies to keep the region clean, healthy, and conducive for both living and business activities.

On the issue of accountability, she reminded the Municipal Chief Executive and the Assembly that sanitation has been designated as a key performance indicator for their administration. She stressed that government places a high premium on environmental cleanliness and expects tangible, measurable, and lasting results.

She further called on all stakeholders including residents, traders, institutions, traditional leaders, and community groups to actively support and participate in the initiative. She emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility that requires collective effort.

In her concluding remarks, the Minister commended the Assembly, development partners, and all contributors who played a role in bringing the initiative to life. She then officially declared the 24-Hour Clean Ga East Program launched, expressing confidence that it will position Ga East as a model municipality in sanitation management.

She added that beyond improving environmental conditions, the initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the broader goals of the 24-hour economy policy, particularly in driving job creation, enhancing service delivery, and stimulating economic activity across the region.
