Accra, Ghana – The Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie Esq., has emphasized the critical role of integrated supply chain management in promoting sustainable national and continental development.
Speaking as the keynote speaker at the 7th Chartered Institute of Supply Chain Management (CISCM) Induction and Investiture Ceremony, Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie said effective supply chain systems are essential for building resilient institutions, improving resource management, and accelerating economic growth.
Delivering a speech on the theme “Integrated Supply Chain Management: A Catalyst for Sustainable National and Continental Development,” she noted that supply chain management has evolved beyond procurement and logistics to become a vital component of governance, public administration, and institutional transformation.
She explained that Africa’s developmental challenges are partly linked to fragmented systems, weak coordination, and inefficient use of resources, stressing the need for integrated approaches that strengthen planning, procurement, production, transportation, distribution, and governance.
According to her, Ghana has a significant opportunity to leverage integrated supply chain management to enhance food security, improve healthcare delivery, strengthen energy reliability, expand industrial productivity, and deepen regional trade through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Highlighting reforms within the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie introduced the “Think Ghana Prison Service 360 Degrees” framework, an initiative aimed at transforming correctional facilities from centres of confinement into hubs of rehabilitation, skills development, productivity, and innovation.
She said the initiative has led to the expansion of vocational and technical training for inmates, agricultural programmes to support food security, and the establishment of industrial production centres within prison facilities.
She revealed that the Ghana Prisons Service has secured opportunities to manufacture school furniture and uniforms for the Ghana Education Service, as well as produce sanitary pads for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie stressed that inmates are part of society and must be equipped with skills and opportunities that will enable successful reintegration after serving their sentences.
She further commended the Chartered Institute of Supply Chain Management for its strategic focus on areas such as agriculture, healthcare, energy, extractive industries, tourism, and security supply chains, describing these initiatives as critical to national resilience and sustainable development.
The Director General also encouraged stronger partnerships between CISCM and the Ghana Prisons Service, particularly in supporting capacity building for women officers, entrepreneurship initiatives among officers’ spouses, and vocational opportunities for female inmates.
She congratulated the newly inducted professionals and urged them to uphold integrity, innovation, accountability, and excellence as they contribute to improving organizations and economies.
Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie also called on stakeholders to support Ghana’s hosting of the International Federation of Procurement and Supply Chain Summit in 2026, describing it as an opportunity to showcase the country’s professional expertise and commitment to global supply chain advancement.
The 7th CISCM Induction and Investiture Ceremony brought together supply chain professionals, industry leaders, government representatives, and stakeholders to celebrate the achievements of new members joining the profession.
