The Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has justified the government’s decision to implement a strict and disciplined approach to governance, pointing to the magnitude of challenges inherited from the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
Speaking in an interview with UK TV Ghana during the Maiden Social Democrats’ Convocation at GIMPA, Mr. Gbande criticized the former government for what he described as poor resource management and unfulfilled promises. He cited the failure to deliver key infrastructure such as community toilets and boreholes, as well as the inability to create the widely promised four million jobs for Ghanaian youth.
According to him, the administration of President John Dramani Mahama assumed office under difficult conditions, with several unresolved national issues complicating governance. He noted that these circumstances have made it necessary for the current leadership to adopt tough but necessary measures, while urging citizens to remain patient as efforts are made to stabilize the economy.
Mr. Gbande stressed that the government is operating a lean and efficient system aimed at ensuring accountability and value for money. He contrasted this with the previous administration, which he accused of awarding contracts without proper scrutiny, leading to alleged corruption.
He explained that the government’s “restrictive discipline” strategy is designed to curb wasteful spending and protect public funds, emphasizing that transparency and prudence are guiding principles of the current administration.
On the political front, Mr. Gbande accused sections of the opposition NPP of attempting to undermine government efforts through persistent criticism and misinformation. He suggested that such actions are intended to erode public confidence and portray both major political parties as ineffective.
Despite the challenges, he expressed optimism about the government’s direction, insisting that its commitment to integrity and responsible governance will ultimately yield positive outcomes for Ghanaians.
